Free Speech & Human Rights in China and the US
Monday, January 8th, 7:00 pm -- 9:00 pm

Director Jonathan Lewis will present clips from his film "China from the Inside" Episode 4: Freedom and Justice. Xiao Qiang, Director of the China Internet Project, and artist Hung Liu will discuss their media and human rights work in China and the US.

Jonathan Lewis serves as writer, narrator, producer and director of China from the Inside. He was granted unique access by the Chinese government to film this four hour documentary series, the new KQED-Granada Television co-production for PBS and the BBC. From his first meeting with the Chinese government to the final edits, China from the Inisde took Lewis over four years to complete.

The first links between China and the Bay Area were formed in 1848, when three servants arrived with a trading family; tens of thousands of Chinese followed during the Gold Rush. Today, Chinese students and entrepreneurs still flock to the Bay Area and San Francisco architects are designing Shanghai's skyline. Our panelists will discuss ideas to ensure that the Bay Area remains the premier economic and cultural gateway between the United States and China.

The 5th International Symposium on Digital Earth

The 5th International Symposium on Digital Earth (ISDE5) will span four days and will address a broad national and international audience across a spectrum of industry, academic, government, and citizen attendees. Digital Earth is a global partnership, nurtured by the Beijing Declaration, and is composed of NGOs, educators, business, and government leaders collaborating for a better future by harnessing unprecedented technical and educational facilities over the Web for exploring the Earth, better understanding its systems, and investigating impacts and remediation responses of human activities.
