BCI Announces New Leadership

BCI is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Wen-hsin Yeh as the new director of the Berkeley China Initiative effective July 1, 2008.  Yeh, Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies and Richard H. and Laurie C. Morrison Chair Professor in History, brings to the position a breadth of knowledge in the China field and years of experience working to promote the study of China in the US and abroad.  According to Yeh, in order to better prepare the next generation of students for their interaction with China, “We need to redesign the research paradigm about China, enhance the teaching of China in undergraduate curriculum, and increase opportunities for students to gain exposure to China.”  Under Yeh’s leadership and with the assistance of a faculty steering committee, BCI will focus its efforts on forming intellectual partnerships with China, enhancing the teaching of China across the disciplines, and promoting public understanding of China.
